Charity of the Year

The Sedos Charity of the Year is Angel Shed

Sedos is pleased to announce that we have chosen Angel Shed as our 2013 Charity of the Year. Amongst other things, this means that 50% of proceeds from one performance of every show will be donated to Angel Shed. In the past we have given £5,000 to our Charity of the Year!

Introducing Angel Shed

Angel Shed Theatre Company is a charity supported solely by sponsorship and donation and the only truly inclusive theatre company in Islington. We run theatre workshops and stage performance that bring together children and young people aged 7-16 from all parts of the community whatever their social or educational background.

Angel Shed's vision is that every child, regardless of disability, income or background be given the opportunity to shine in the performing arts. It is a fully inclusive theatre charity, providing specialist opportunities for children otherwise excluded from this kind of activity.

History

Angel Shed began life in September 2004 as part of the initiative of renowned theatre company Chickenshed to create a network of independent ‘sheds’ working with their inclusive methods.

Since then they’ve continued to grow and develop to become an established inclusive theatre workshop provider in Islington. Angel Shed retain links with Chickenshed, who provide training opportunities for their volunteers, advice and a communications network with other sheds. They remain, however, financially and artistically independent.

Difference

Angel Shed's inclusive approach sets them apart. They believe in giving every child, regardless of their educational or physical needs, or their socio-economic, religious or ethnic backgrounds, the chance to be involved in the performing arts.

Angel Shed give children and young people – who otherwise might not have had the opportunity to do so – the chance to explore a whole new, rich, exciting and safe creative world. In the process they grow in confidence and develop respect for themselves and each other. They also develop the ability to engage with the performing arts in a variety of different ways.

Aims

  • To allow children and young people of all abilities access to an inclusive performing arts experience.
  • To genuinely include and represent children and young people from all communities in Islington and neighbouring areas.
  • To encourage awareness, acceptance and respect for other people’s ideas, beliefs and abilities.
  • To promote creativity and freedom of expression through the use of challenging and stimulating theatrical activities.
  • To encourage teamwork and positive communication.
  • To build confidence and independence in a safe and enjoyable environment.
