Kiss of the Spider Woman
a musical by Kander and Ebb, 23-27 November 2010

Winner of multiple Tony Awards including Best Musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman revamps a harrowing tale of persecution into a dazzling spectacle that juxtaposes gritty realities with liberating fantasies.

Luis Alberto Molina, a gay window dresser, is in a Latin American prison serving his third year of an eight year sentence for allegedly corrupting a minor. He lives in a fantasy world in order to escape the horrors of prison life. His cinematic fantasies all star his screen goddess - Aurora. He can recount every scene in all her films with astonishing detail, but there’s one role that terrifies him – the Spider Woman, who kills with her kiss.

One day, another prisoner is brought to Molina’s cell: Valentin Arregui Paz, a Marxist revolutionary, already in a bad state of health after being tortured. Valentin believes in his just cause which makes all suffering bearable. Molina believes in the magic of love which makes all else endurable. Gradually Valentine is drawn into Molina’s movie world and out of this most unlikely of pairings, something extraordinary happens – each surrenders to the other something of himself that he has never surrendered before.

“...one of the most emotional musicals ever written for the stage, a show about the healing power of storytelling amidst profound suffering, about the power of people to change each other’s lives.”
