Stepping Out

This warm and very funny play enjoyed a hugely successful West End run in 1984 and won Evening Standard Best Comedy Award. (In 1998 there was a less-successful musical version).

In "Stepping Out", a group of women and one man at a weekly tap-dance class in a dingy North London church hall struggling to conquer their inhibitions and a preponderance of left feet!

Mavis, a dancer who never made it past the chorus line, has turned teacher. Those pupils, with varying degrees of talent, have just a few weeks to get ready for a big charity concert.

Seven women and one man, an ill-assorted lot, must work as a team. They all have different reasons for coming to the class and, as the play progresses, we gradually learn something of their lives
and what brought them here.
